Navneet Sharda, MD / Cancer Care Center
was awarded the Highest Level of Accreditation from The Joint Commission
in Jan 2012 and is the only oncology center in Las Vegas Valley to hold this Accreditation (2012-current).
An independent, not-for-profit organization, The Joint Commission accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organizations commitment to meeting certain performance standards.
Joint Commission health care professionals visit the organization, interview staff and patients, and view records and procedures. The performance of the organization is judged against The Joint Commission’s standards and related expectations. The Ambulatory Care Facility must meet or exceed the stringent Joint Commission performance requirements in order to achieve or maintain accreditation. The performance of the health care organization is then monitored on an on-going basis through several mechanisms.
Preparing for a Joint Commission survey can be a challenging process for any healthcare provider. At a minimum, a hospital or medical facility must be completely familiar with the current standards, examine current processes, policies and procedures relative to the standards, and prepare to improve any areas that are not currently in compliance. The hospital or medical facility must be in compliance with the standards for at least four months prior to the initial survey. The hospital or medical facility should also be in compliance with applicable standards during the entire period of accreditation, which means that surveyors will look for a full three years of implementation for several standards-related issues.
The Joint Commission’s standards set forth performance expectations that address the safety and quality of patient care–that is, areas in which good performance is likely to lead to good outcomes for patients. The standards specifically cover issues that are important to consumers such as:
- Administration of medication
- Advanced Imaging Quality Control
- Evaluation and appropriate treatment of pain
- Sufficient staffing and staff training
- Infection control
